Three ӣֱ alumni and an ӣֱ trustee emeritus will be a part of the Virginia Conference delegation at the 2024 United Methodist Church General Conference from April 23 to May 3 in Charlotte, N.C.

Lindsey Baynham Freeman ’09, Jason Stanley ’04, Rob Vaughn ’75, and trustee emeritus Mark Ogren have all been elected as clergy delegates. Additionally, Freeman has been selected as the head of the delegation, a significant honor.

“Every day I feel honored by this calling for this particular season,” said Freeman, the pastor at Welborne United Methodist Church in Richmond, Va. “I am constantly amazed by the wisdom, grace, experience, and joy that our delegation exudes.”

The UMC General Conference is the highest legislative body of the United Methodist Church, and the only place where global, denomination-wide decisions can be made. The 2024 General Conference is of particular significance, as among other official church business, the UMC will make key decisions regarding LGBTQIA+ inclusion and regionalization.

Stanley is the District Coordinator of Church Revitalization for the Coastal Virginia District of the UMC, while Vaughn and Ogren are both retired clergy who live in Ashland and worship at Duncan Memorial UMC on ӣֱ’s campus. Vaughn is also a leader in the Reconciling Ministries movement.
